NINGURA NAPURRULA

Ningura Napurrula was born around 1938 at Watulka, south of Kiwirrkurra in Western Australia. She is the widow of Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi, a highly respected Pintupi elder who held a significant knowledge of his countries Dreaming stories. In 1996 she was part of a group of elderly women from Kintore and Kiwirrkurra who began painting for Papunya Tula Artists in their own right.

Ningura's works contain strong linear designs with heavy layers of acrylic paint with stunning results. She has been represented in several group exhibitions in Australia and overseas.  She is in many major private, corporate and public collections and galleries in Australia and around the world.

Ningura's profile has exploded in the past few years; so much so that she has recently featured on an international stamp in a series released by Australia Post. Ningura Napurrula is one of the eight artists whose work is now part of the largest international commission of contemporary Indigenous art from Australia at the  Musée du quai Branly in Paris

In 2007, Napurrula was named as one of Australia's 50 most collectable artists by the prestigious Australian Art Collector magazine.

ROCKHOLES

Ningura Napurrula depicts the mythological events of her ancestors. Her artworks focus on the travels of her female ancestors, the sacred sites they passed, and the mythological significance of the bush tucker they collected. Her Dreamings are associated with the rock hole sites of Palturunya and Wirrulnga, east of the Kiwirrkurra Community in Western Australia. The concentric circles represent rock holes and the arcs represent the higher rocky outcrops near the site. These travels and rituals help to explain the current customs and the ceremonial lives of the Pintupi women.
