REX WINSTON WALFORD  - DUST STORM

Rex Winston was born in 1968 in Sydney, NSW and belongs to the Kamilaroi language group. Winston was adopted at three months of age, growing up at Nyngan, a farming community in central western NSW.

Winston’s interest in his birth mother and aboriginal heritage was sparked when he first began painting. With the support of his adoptive parents and a government agency he was able to locate and meet his birth mother and it was only recently he also met his aboriginal father.

Rex has never had any formal art training. He is an established commercial contemporary Aboriginal artist who has under taken numerous commissions with works being held in various private collections.

Rex’s contemporary paintings are a unique response to his environment and landscape, expressed through an innate skill for precise dot markings.

This artwork belongs to the storm series and reflects the diverse weather we encounter in Australia. This painting depicts the moment you are engulfed by a major dust storm just before it blocks out the sun. As a child back in the early eighties living on our family farm at Nyngan I experienced this on a few occasions.

Australia is a vast continent and has many different weather patterns, which sometimes can change very quickly and also as the seasons change.

The Western and Central states are known for the dust storms where as the northern states are known for their wet seasons, along with their cyclones. Eastern states can have many hale storms and the southern states have snow storms.

If you find yourself caught in one of these storms you will find it is much like what I have captured in this painting.
