Fabrianne Peterson Nampitjinpa was born in 1965 in Papunya located 240 km North West of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Coming from an artistic family, Fabrianne Peterson Nampitjinpa lived in Walungurru where she painted alongside her mother-in-law, the well respected and world renowned indigenous artist Narpula Scobie Napurrula.
Fabrianne depicts the Willy Wagtail Dreaming stories of the Mt Liebig area. They include Bush Potato, Witchetty Grub with Snake (Kunatjarrayi), Honey Ant and ‘Waingunu’ (Bush Damper) Dreamings.
She pays particular attention to detail, creating the most inspiring and brilliant paintings which give the impression of depth and varied perspective. Her work features in many important public and private collections throughout Australia and around the world in private and corporate collections in America, Denmark, Poland and France.
In this painting Fabrianne paints the Bush Damper story, depicting the seeds of the Wangunu plant that is found in the arid landscape of Alice Springs. Seeds from the wiry grass like plant are collected after the summer rain when seeding occurs. The fine branches of the Wangunu or woolybutt plant are burnt over the ashes of a cold fire, with the remaining dried out seeds collected in a coolamon. These seeds are then ground and added to a mixture of salt and water to make damper, a traditional staple food source that is nutritious and can be kept for an extended period of time.
