Charmaine Pwerle is an Anmatyerre artist from the Utopia region in the Northern Territory. The granddaughter of world renowned award winning artist Minnie Pwerle (deceased) and the daughter of artist Barbara Weir. Charmaine paints 'Awelye - Body Paint Design ' a story that has been passed onto her from her famous grandmother.  

AWELYE (BODY PAINT DESIGN)

This painting depicts Awelye, the body paint design associated with women’s ceremony - the traditional practice of Aboriginal women painting their bodies for ceremony. These designs are painted onto the chest, breasts, arms and thighs. The circles represent ceremonial sites or where her totem (Bush Melon) is located
