Thanks Vivienne!

Jeannie Petyarre  was born in 1951 on the Boundary Bore Outstation of Utopia, in the Central Desert Region of the Northern Territory. In 1988 Jeannie was part of the group who produced Batik work using desert design on silk and cotton. Jeannie was encouraged by her aunt, the famous Emily Kngwarreye to continue to paint her family's Yam and Bush Medicine Dreaming.

She is a highly respected artist within her community who promotes her culture through her paintings. Her works are sought after by collectors worldwide.

This painting depicts leaves of a special plant that are used for medical purposes. Women go to different places around her country, Utopia, to collect such leaves. Once selected the leaves are boiled to extract resin and kangaroo fat is mixed through creating a paste that can be stored in the bush for extended periods. The medicine is used to heal cuts, bites, burns, rashes and also acts as an insect repellant.
