NARPULA SCOBIE- WOMENS CEREMONY

Born at Haasts Bluff, Narpula Scobie (also cited as Nabula and Nabulla) began painting for Papunya Tula Artists in the 1980’s and was one of the first women to do so in Walungurru.

She was married to Johnny Scobie Tjapanangka (now deceased), a Pintupi artist who was involved at the beginning of the Aboriginal art movement in Papunya.

Narpula’s work often depicts ceremonial body paint, rockholes, bush food and other womens stories.

In this painting she depicts women’s initiation ceremony where senior women elders represented by the U shapes gather together to teach their culture & dreamtime stories to the young women.

They travel between one sacred site to another, depicted by the concentric circles, teaching the importance of each site, their dreamtime songs & dances in the area of the artist’s birthplace. They also teach their young women how to survive & collect bush tucker.
