Rex Winston was born in 1968 in Sydney, NSW and belongs to the Kamilaroi language group. Winston was adopted by a white family at three months of age and grew up at Nyngan, a farming community in central western NSW. Winstons interest in his birth mother and aboriginal heritage was sparked when he first began painting. With the support of his adoptive parents and a government agency he was able to locate and meet his birth mother and it was only last year he also met his aboriginal father.
Rex has never had any formal art training. He is an established commercial contemporary Aboriginal artist who has unde taken numerous commissions with works being held in numerous private collections. Rex has been a finalist in the NSW parliament indigenous art prize every year since it started except for 2006 and was commended in 2010
Rex’s contemporary paintings are a unique response to his environment and landscape, expressed through an innate skill for precise dot markings.
Sun Dreaming is a tribute to the power of the sun which brings life to the earth with its light and warmth. Plants grow and feed animals and insects. Even the corals and fish are dependent on the sun's light.
The sun sets measure of our time with its daily rising. However, the sun can also bring death in the form of heat and drought. It is a reminder of the importance of balance in our lives.
The sun is part of Australian life. Aboriginal legends say that the sun is a great fire, made from wood collected from the forests in the sky by a cloud spirit. In the early morning the fire is just lit and burns slowly and then as the fire grows larger it becomes hotter and by midday it is fully ablaze.
By evening the fire is nearly out, down to a pile of red embers and the process starts again the next day without fail
Sunlight contains all the colours of the spectrum, we see this in rainbows, and I reflect this in the different colours I use for the Sun Dreaming paintings
