TANYA PRICE NANGALA - WILD BUSH HONEY FLOWER & MEDICINE LEAF DREAMING

Tanya was born in the Utopia region of the Northern Territory, a former cattle station located approximately 300km north east of Alice Springs. She first learnt to paint by watching her grandparents before developing her own unique and highly detailed style.

Tanya paints the bush tucker and flowers found in the harsh desert lands of Utopia. Annual rainfall is very low however after the winter rains, the country bursts into life with colourful flowers and bush foods. The women still go out to this day to collect these special plants, seeds and fruits which can be used for many things including as a food source rich with vitamins and bush medicine.

Dreaming stories associated with bush foods are not only important in terms of their subsistence role in everyday life, but also take on additional cultural significance as demonstrations of knowledge of country.
