GLENYS NAPALTJARRI

Glenys lives at Kiwirrikura, a remote community 700kms NW of Alice Springs, she is married to Oscar Jakamarra and has two sons.

Glenys has been painting since 2006. Glenys’s mother Ningura Naparulla whos works are sought after by collectors both in Australia and abroad taught her to paint women’s dreaming. Glenys’s father was Yala Yala Gibbs also an original member of Papunya Tula Artists (now deceased). Yinarupa Nangala is second mother to Glenys, being Yala Yala Gibbs second wife.

Glenys paints predominantly in three colours, a black or red oxide background with design elements painted in dark red and then stippling of thick cream paint in between the design.

Glenys paints Women’s Tingari Dreamings, the concentric circles depicted in her paintings are sacred women’s sites. In the dreamtime the Tingari women travelled across the country depicted by the straight lines (travelling lines) they came from west of Kiwirrikura. Women are illustrated as U shapes, sitting next to their grinding stones (for grinding up seeds) and coolamon bowls (for holding bush tucker - oval shapes), the striped cone shapes are water vessels constructed by the women made of wood, small circles indicate plenty of Bush Tomato in that area, and cream dotted background colour is the earth and many witchetty grub are found there. The Tingari women performed many important dances and ceremonies at these sites, women still go there and do the same today.
