ABOUT KENNY WARK YUNGAMULWOI

Ken Wark was born in the late 1940’s near the mouth of the Roper River in East Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. This area is known as Dhuruputbi and the language is Balummumu/Djapu and his tribe is the Munungurr.

Ken lived in isolation in this area for the majority of his youth receiving no formal education until his family moved to the nearest major town of Katherine. This lack of contact with "white civilization" in his formative years shows through in his paintings. He depicts subjects which are often associated with hunting & gathering activities such as bush foods, birds, animals and reptiles. He paints in the Arnhem Land X-ray style with fine cross hatching. He is also very well-known as a didgeridoo maker.

Ken says his father and grandfather have had the biggest influence on his work. From a young age Ken watched these two people paint and learnt from them and the dreamtime tales that their paintings conveyed. In later years Ken has been influenced by David Blanasi (deceased) and George Jungawanga, (Left hand George). During this period Ken also served several years in the local Army Reserve.

ABOUT THIS DIDGERIDOO

This didgeridoo has been hand picked for its sound quality and artwork by the Spirit Gallery team on their most recent didgeridoo buying trip to the Top End. It is made from a native Australian Eucalyptus tree that has been hollowed by a termite and then worked on by the maker to turn it into an instrument.

Once cut, the tree or sapling has been allowed to dry, to help minimise and prevent the likelihood of cracks and splits later on. The next process involves stripping the bark, taking further timber off and smoothing and preparing the surface.

In its final stage it has been hand painted by Kenny Wark and sealed with a gloss finish to protect the artwork, allowing it to be used as both a serious instrument and a piece of art.

The mouthpiece is fitted with a pliable beeswax mouthpiece. The beeswax provides the player with a comfortable seal and is also adjustable to different sizes to suit each individual player.

Great affordable genuine Aboriginal painted eucalyptus didgeridoo!
