GRACIE MORTON PWERLE - BUSH PLUM

Gracie Morton was born in1956 on the Utopia Station. Her language group is Alyawarre. As with other women artists from the Utopia region she began her painting career in the 1980's working with batik, then commenced painting with acrylics on canvas. She often paints the bush plum or bush seed dreaming.

In this painting Gracie depict her Dreaming of the "bush plum”.  This particular Dreaming was passed down to her from her father and aunt to ensure the preservation of this Dreaming story.

The Bush Plum is a stable bush food source, rich in Vitamin C that is gathered by Aboriginal women. This fruit can be eaten raw or cooked. Ceremonies are also performed to celebrate the growth and importance of the Bush Plum as well as the regeneration to promote the continued life of the plant.
