Title:Mina Mina Dreaming
Medium:Acrylic on belgian linen
Size: 122 X 91cm

Elsie Napanangka Granites was born in 1959 in Yuendumu, a remote aboriginal community in the Northern Territory, 290 km north-west of Alice Springs. Elsie has spent most of her life in Yuendumu and is an active member of the community.

Elsie has three children, many grandchildren, and one great grand- daughter who she helps to bring up. She also teaches them her dreaming stories that have been handed down to her from her own parents. The stories relate to her country, its features and the animals and plants that live on it.

The country associated with this painting is Mina Mina, a place West of Yuendumu, significant to Napanangka women who are the custodians of the Dreaming that created the area.

The Dreaming describes the journey of a group of selected women who travelled East gathering bush food and performing ceremonies. Along the way the women collected snake vine which is a vine sacred to Napanangka women and has many uses. It is used as a ceremonial wrap, as a strap to carry Coolamon dish laden with bush tucker and as a tourniquet for headaches.
