JILL KELLY KEMARRE - SPINIFEX GRASSES AND FIRE DREAMING

Jill Kelly Kemarre was born in 1959, an Alyawarr woman, she also speaks Eastern Arrernte and English. Her father's county is Irrultja located on Alyawarr land north of the Utopia region of Central Australia.

She currently lives with her husband Dudley Petrick and family at Irriliree Outstation, 250kms north east of Alice Springs near the beautiful Harts Ranges.

Jill has been painting for over 25 years. Over these years she has worked for the art centre in Amperlatwaty north of the Utopia Region. In 2001 and 2002 her work was exhibited with DesArt in Sydney and Melbourne. Jill also paints for her community art centre in Atitjere.

Her paintings represent elements associated with the stories from her traditional country. In this painting she has depicted the spinifex grasses and fire. The Spinifex grasses narrative is mainly to do with men and women and their unique roles. Women collect the grass to weave with and men grind the seeds (background dotting), to make glue to repair objects.
