Custom Made Didgeridoo for Sydney International Rotary Convention

The International Rotary Convention was held in Sydney from the 1st-4th June 2014. The event was a huge success and attended by approximately 20,000 Rotarians from over 150 countries around the world.

Spirit Gallery was commissioned to create a didgeridoo as a welcome gift for the President of Rotary International, Ron D Burton.

The didgeridoo was made by Kristian Benton with a customised message and presented by Reno Safarian and Gumaroy Newman at the indigenous arts stand inside the “Friendship House”

Thanking Alan from Rotary Strathfield for working with us and giving us this opportunity.

Didgeridoo in The Iranian Desert

A couple of years ago while visiting Australia from Iran, Pooria Shafieitabar entered our store and was fascinated by the didgeridoo and decided he simply just has to have one.

He promised he would take the didgeridoo back to Iran, learn how to play and maybe one day send us some footage of him and his friends jamming Iranian style.

We love the didgeridoo being played in unusual, unseen settings. Add the backdrop of the Iranian desert and we have exactly that.

Video below !! Thanks for the footage Pooria. Much appreciated.

New Bruce Rogers & Carved Kristian Benton Didgeridoos

It has been a long wait but we have finally received some carved didgeridoos from Kristian Benton and some amazingly high quality didgeridoos from master craftsmen Bruce Rogers.

There are very few didgeridoo makers who also happen to be great artists and even rarer, great players. This is why Kristian is by far Australia’s most talented crafter/player/artist combo. Kristian has carved some beautiful new didgeridoos for us. Carving has become such a rare art form especially on quality sounding didgeridoos. Kristian truly is an amazing, rare and unique talent.

The wait is also over for some new Bruce Roger’s didgeridoos. Bruce takes his time and does not produce a high volume of instruments but when he makes a didge they are a pure work of genius. This bunch of didges are some of the most user friendly sweet sounding balanced didgeridoos we have seen from Bruce in a long time.

We visited Bruce during last year’s Melbourne Didgeridoo and Cultural Festival and he was kind enough to invite us to his home/workshop where we couldn’t resist but record a quick didge solo. Enjoy!

Spirit Gallery Masterpieces of 2013 and their proud owners!

The 3.1 metre Heartland Didgeridoo, the longest didgeridoo we have ever had in the store, has found a new home far far away in Egersund Norway and is now proudly displayed there in the Kakadu store. It has already created a lot of interest with a local newspaper already running a feature on it.

Our Norwegian friend Eivind who visits Australia every year and who already has quite an impressive collection of didgeridoos from Spirit Gallery could not resist this monster didge when he came face to face with it in the gallery. Check out Eivind with his new toy and its final resting place in Norway.

Thanks also to Sandy and Lee Harden, our American friends who purchased the other favourite Spirit Gallery piece of 2013 – the dot painted bench. This bench was painted by 10 individual artists from the Keringke Art Centre in the remote community of Santa Teresa in the central Australian desert. Each artist painted a different piece and once assembled we had one of the most remarkable pieces of Aboriginal Art we have seen. Check it out!

Didgeridoo Screen Wall Project in Sydney CBD

Late last year Spirit Pharmaceuticals contacted us to help them with their ambitious plan to use 72 didgeridoos as a screen/partition wall as part of their refurbishments at their offices in the Sydney CBD.

After some consultation between Spirit Gallery and the designers we were able to come up with the final concept. The renovations have now been completed, as has the didgeridoo screen wall.

72 colourful full length didgeridoos were used and are now a permanent feature of their main office. Being didgeridoo addicts here at Spirit Gallery this was an awesome project to be involved with.

Many thanks to Spirit Pharmaceuticals and their CEO Gary Waters for giving us this opportunity and trusting us with the job, and of course for the purchase of 72 didgeridoos!

Check it out!

So stay tuned as we get some new handpicked didges from Earl Clements, Yidaki from Arnhem Land and our new affordable plain didgeridoo range.

Gumaroy Newman Didgeridoo Solo @ Spirit Gallery

Our good friend and regular visitor Gumaroy dropped in and kindly recorded a couple of video clips for us.

Not only is Gumaroy one of the most talented didge players in the country, he is also an indigenous storyteller, presenter, educator, songman and poet.

A proud descendant of the Gamilaroi and Wakka Wakka nations, Gumaroy has performed in over 40 countries and is regularly called upon for major Australian events.

Gumaroy is available for corporate events, workshops, didgeridoo performances and lessons, educational programs and more. You can find more information at http://yidakiyulugi.com/

Spirit Gallery Didgeridoos & William Barton at the Sydney Opera House

Our good friend William Barton will be performing at the Sydney Opera House on Saturday 3rd August with the Australian Youth Orchestra. William came in earlier in the week before rehearsals to pick out the didgeridoos he will be using.

William knows a good didge when he sees one and these three beauties caught his attention- a CrookedStixz Didgeridoo (left) Tristan O’meara Didgeridoo (middle) and Bruce Rogers (right). Three of the countries top instrument makers all on stage at the Opera House- awesome!!

The Spirit Gallery team will be attending the event and there are still a limited number of tickets left for the evening.
